Jon Stewart takes down CNN, MSNBC for New York winter storm coverage

The Daily Show with Jon StewartNew York City, we get it: There was an enormous winter storm coming through, and it generated a whole lot of headlines. However, was it really enough to justify the insane amount of media coverage it received? Probably not.

Yet, this is still the way that the media works from time to time, which is probably why “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” chose to make so much fun of it on a new episode of the show this week. Specifically, Stewart took down MSNBC and CNN for the obsessive way in which they continued to cover the storm, which really ended up being not that bad in New York City. (The worst of it was directed instead to New England.) This was, at least per his argument, a fine example of major media outlets refusing to stray from their original plans after investing such a great deal of time and money into making this into a reality.

Of course, the best thing that this video did was produce a few laughs, and also remind us in a way of how we tend to take Stewart for granted these days. Thanks mostly to a recency bias, we spend most of our time talking about people like John Oliver and Larry Wilmore. While excellent, Stewart is the man that really started it all, and there are just as many late-night talk shows that stem from him now (Wilmore, Oliver, and Stephen Colbert) than there are from “Saturday Night Live” (Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers).

Now, we have to wait and see what the media does the next time there’s a storm.
