Golden Globes spotlight: Is ‘Orange Is the New Black’ set to reign supreme?

Now that we are right around a week away from the Golden Globe Awards, we are kicking off a new feature where every day, we will spotlight a different one of the major TV categories, giving our own perspective on what the outcome will and of course should be.

There are some this year that we believe will be competitive, and we give some credit to the Hollywood Foreign Press first and foremost for trying to be different. At least they are not just phoning it in, and giving you the same exact people year after year. (We’re staring at you, Screen Actors Guild Awards.) The nominees for Supporting Actress this year are tremendous, even if we do have a qualm with every genre and type of television being crammed into one category. Still, it feels like this is a category that is easy to narrow down slightly.

The nominees – Kathy Bates (“American Horror Story: Freak Show,” FX), Uzo Aduba (“Orange Is the New Black,” Netflix), Joanne Froggat (“Downton Abbey,” PBS), Michelle Monaghan (“True Detective,” HBO), Allison Janney (“Mom,” CBS)

Who should win – Let’s start by eliminating the unlikely. Froggatt may have a good case for a nomination for the upcoming fifth season, but she shouldn’t have been nominated this year. Meanwhile, Monaghan’s likely to be forgotten about on a show dominated by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. Maybe we’re taking a risk here, but we’re giving it to Adbua. “Orange Is the New Black” has had the greatest cultural impact, and we also feel like she has meant so much to that show in its short lifespan.

Who will win – It’s still between the three names we mentioned above, but we’re going to say that Bates wins it. Awards shows love Kathy Bates, and they love Ryan Murphy products. She also was tremendous as Ethel in the time in which she was around. Had “Orange Is the New Black” been a little more recent, Aduba may have been able to overcome being more of an unknown.
