Will ABC’s ‘Galavant’ be as glorious as it seems?

Galavant -While we may give ABC a hard time occasionally for their insistence on social media and for being too much of a Disney mouthpiece, we’re not complaining at all when it comes to their willingness to take chances. In the summer, they have given us shows like “Whodunnit?” and “The Quest,” which tried to be new reality properties, and if nothing else, they were plenty of fun.

With “Galavant” premiering Sunday night, they are doing something equally risky: Launching a musical comedy set in a medieval world, and airing it in bunches over the course of a small handful of weeks. It’s a show that on paper seems to be glorious fun, almost like “The Princess Bride” in song. Also, it has Timothy Omundson of “Psych” fame, and a good lineup of guest stars including John Stamos and Ricky Gervais.

A great example of what this show is bringing to the table is the video below. For the first few seconds of it, you may think that this is some sort of cheesy family comedy, and then you hear jokes about cleavage, loyalty, and some other funny feudal things. It’s also a great introduction to the story itself, which revolves around a man on a quest after losing everything … including the woman he loves, who seems to decide that she’d much rather have fame and fortune than being with him. Ouch.

There’s nothing that we would love more than to see this show become a surprise hit, and then get renewed for another season. It may have a shot, as well, when you look at how there is a whole in the market Sunday night. “The Celebrity Apprentice” is not going to be airing until 9:00 p.m., and the only real non-sports competition is therefore “Madam Secretary” and Fox’s Animation Domination. We feel like the latter is more competition than the former, but even that is not so bad.
