‘Downton Abbey’ season 5 Christmas Special review: A Mr. Carson – Mrs. Hughes shock; did Tom, Rose leave?

Downton -Tonight, “Downton Abbey” aired what was a massive two-hour episode. There are times when we really wish that the show shortened these Christmas Specials up, but there were at least many an important moment within this story here. (Spoilers ahead for Americans!)

For example, there were constant questions throughout regarding whether or not Tom Branson really would be leaving the Abbey to start a new life in Boston. He had planned on it well before this episode, and taking his daughter Sybbie with him.

Meanwhile, Lady Rose and her husband were seemingly left in the air, which is somewhat unfortunate since the Lily James – leaving rumors are out there. The truth here is that why it seems to be that Tom is most-likely leaving, we never saw him journey off. Therefore, we’re still hoping that he will still have a role on the show at some point … though it was clear that the show doesn’t know what to do with the character beyond have him debate if he belongings. Also, Robert’s speech was all sorts of fun and sentimental.

The biggest surprise of the entire episode, though, had nothing to really do when it comes to departures; instead, it was Mr. Carson proposing to Mrs. Hughes! Who saw that coming? It was quite possibly the most delightful moment in any Christmas Special for this series.

As for Anna’s temporary release from prison (which could become permanent), that was a little bit easier to predict. We don’t think that the show would split them apart forever!

As for some random odds and ends, who knew Michelle Dockery could sing like that? “Silent Night” is not an easy one to perform, either!

This episode was slow at first, but the final half-hour was jam-packed full of good stuff and strong character moments. Also, it really felt like Christmas! While the future of Rose and Tom could go either way, we are still pleased with the episode as a whole. Unlike last year, it at least felt like enough happened to keep us satisfied and anxious until the show returns this fall. Grade: A-.
