‘The Fall’ season 3 debate: Should Jamie Dornan return?
Last week, we saw the official end of “The Fall” season 2, and in the midst of that, we saw a rather shocking ending: Paul Spector was shot!
With that being said, is it really the end of Jamie Dornan on the show? The brilliant thing about this ending is that it does paint a very ambiguous picture for the future of the show. Maybe Spector survives, or maybe the show moves on with another person for Gibson to focus her energy on. (We should note here that there is not even any confirmation right now that the show is even returning to BBC Two, even with pretty good ratings.)
We figure that the reason for the ambiguous ending for Spector may be tied to Dornan’s status as an up-and-coming movie star. The upcoming “Fifty Shades of Grey” movie could be a turning point in his career, and it is not entirely clear as of yet what sort of roles he is going to be offered after it debuts. If it ends up becoming a big hit, it may be hard for him to continue to commit time to a British television show.
However, at the same time, we still argue that it would be smart for Dornan to keep this going, much in the way that Benedict Cumberbatch continues to go back to “Sherlock.” This is a role that anchors him, appeals him to fans, and also does not take up a whole lot of time in his schedule since it is not necessarily an annual thing. This could be an anchor for Dornan, just in case movies do not pan out well for him, or if he wants to keep these fans on his side.
Should Jamie return for a third season? This is where we leave the answer to you. Share right now in the comments / poll below, or head over here to read our full review of the season 2 finale. Totally bring him back ! He could be the shadow lurking
over Stella. Let’s say he barely survives the gunshot. He would go to intensive
care for quite some time. While he’s out, Stella checks up on his status
regularly because she can’t let go, her inner balance is deeply disturbed.
Meanwhile, another case presents (maybe the cop corruption thing from
season 1 ?), becoming the main focus of police effort, and Stella gets put
in charge (in spite of her reputation being tarnished with everyone condemning
how emotionally involved she got with Spector). At the end of the second
episode, he could wake up from intensive care, facing trial. Then, through a
slip-up of Stella’s, he manages to escape. He disappears from the picture, and
for a long time we know nothing about his whereabouts, like a phantom. The show
can then really focus on Stella. She is confused, ridden with guilt, and her
reputation is in shambles. Maybe they down-promote or fire her. What will
happen then ? Will she go look for Spector on her own ? Will Spector
disappear forever, or is he too involved with Stella to let go. Maybe he’s
observing her downfall closely from somewhere in the shadows…

I voted yes, but then I could have closure on Spector leaving him dead in the forest. I really want a follow up on all the others! I loved Sally Ann’s character and want to see her move on and heal. Maybe there’s a lawsuit coming against the team that put Rose at risk. . .that could fill a season. I’m wondering too, if Katie might become a serial killer and post her ballads about it on the internet . . . . or if she’ll marry Spector in prison should he survive the gunshot. But most of all, I want to see Stella cut loose and smile . . .just once, then I can put the whole thing to rest.

Maybe, but I think the main character of the show is Stella and I would like to see another case. Gillian Anderson is awesome with this role!!

I vote yes. There is no reason to not bring him back. It will only be the third season and there’s 5-6 episodes, how can anyone find that boring? This is one of the most interesting series I have ever watched and it’s because of him that makes it so interesting.

How could he return? He’s been caught and shot. If it comes back, there has to be another psycho to focus on.

New nemesis. New case. Bring Dornan back as Stella’s door to the psychopath’s mind.

I think that’s one of the only ways that this show could come back with a successful 3rd season while holding onto Dornan.

Though I voted “YES” I believe that the show should quit while it is ahead. I just don’t want this amazing show to turn into one of the shows that prolongs forever and loses viewers. If a third season is a go, Jamie should definitely return! Perhaps the last few episode’s of season three would be Spector and Gibson fall for eachother and while a night of intimacy arises Spector strangles Gibson to death and full of guilt decides to turn himself in or commit suicide!

I would be very happy if Jamie Dornan did not show up again. I think it was a mistake to bring him back for a second year. His kind of acting will do for a short while but after an episode or two (or three or four) the trick of not showing any emotion at all in order to be mysterious begins to show, more than any concerned director should wish.
The main possible exception to that would be that an actor is so beautiful, handsome or otherwise fascinating that nobody cares whether he can act or not.
Mr. Dornan unfortunately is rather plainly, run-of-the-mill good-looking, handsome or interesting to look at when the does nothing.

He is a psychopath in the show, psychopaths generally show no emotion, and when they do it is feigned. He does one of the most convincing representations of a psychopath I have ever seen.

I did not have the experience of spending years with psychopaths and I don’t say Mr. Dornan is a bad actor: just that I would be bored with it before the other season.

In the poll I voted “NO”. Jamie Dornan acknowledges that the role as serial killer Paul Spector changed the direction of his career, but he also shares that it was emotionally difficult occupying the headspace of such a demented individual. He was superb –being able to inhabit both the killer and the gentle, loving husband and father. He has such a bright future. No need to continue this role.
