David Letterman’s ‘Late Show’ finale date revealed

Want to know when David Letterman is officially signing off as the host of “The Late Show”? Well, CBS made some of that news official today.

In a press release, the network confirmed that Wednesday, May 20 is going to be his last day on the air, which we are assuming was set that way since it is probably one of the last days of the May sweeps. This allows the network to maximize their ratings potential in the weeks leading up to it; with that being said, this is a little bit later in the year than we were expecting Letterman’s last show to be given when he made his first announcement.

Les Moonves, basically the head of all things CBS, said the following in the release about having to make this transition now:

“it’s going to be tough to say goodbye, but I know we will all cherish the shows leading up to Dave’s final broadcast in May.”

We would especially implore you to enjoy Dave’s final weeks, since in all honesty, we’re not sure just how much he will be popping up on TV once his time is over. Letterman does not strike us as the type who is going to be clinging to every last second of fame; like Johnny Carson after he retired, we imagine that he will live somewhat of a low-key life.

There is no official start date for the Stephen Colbert version of “The Late Show,” but CBS has two options: Either they can run through the summer with guest hosts and launch him with the fall season, or just debut him in June and see how he does.
