Bill Cosby’s ‘Late Show with David Letterman’ appearance canceled; we ponder the future
There are few people in the world of television as legendary as Bill Cosby, but there are also few who have faced allegations quite like him that have simmered for so long.
In the wake of a massive scandal about allegations of rape years ago, coupled with an NPR interview where he refused to answer any of these questions, a Wednesday appearance featuring Cosby on “The Late Show with David Letterman” has been canceled. Regis Philbin will take his place.
The entire issue of Cosby’s past seemed to rise to the surface again courtesy of a comedy set from Hannibal Buress earlier this year referenced the fact that the public seemed to have completely forgot about what happened so many years ago. Of course, Buress made these comments at a show that was not recorded, and obviously not meant to blow the story up to the level in which it has become.
What we wonder now goes beyond Cosby’s appearance on a late-night talk show. He has been getting more back into his standup roots as of late, and he also was in development to have a sitcom at NBC, which could at one point aired in the summer. The network has yet to comment on the state of this, but it definitely is something that is worth watching as we get a little bit deeper into the TV season.
Regardless of what happens, Cosby has made an unavoidable mark on the entertainment industry; the major question that remains here is just what his legacy is going to be.
