‘Downton Abbey’ season 5, episode 8 (finale) spoilers: Michelle Dockery, Elizabeth McGovern hopes
Lady Mary and Lady Cora have each been enormous contributors throughout “Downton Abbey” season 5, but where is the story going to take them for the big finale today? That is something we will try to explore here.
For Mary, we feel like self-reliance has been the name of the game this year. Maybe she does end up finding love in the finale or the Christmas Special next month, but what we have seen from her story is seemingly meant to represent that she is not week, and nor does she need a man in her life in order to be happy. She is more than capable of finding plenty of happiness on her own.
Meanwhile, Cora’s story has largely been about finding her place, and feeling some respect in the home. This is something that still does feel reasonably incomplete, given that we don’t feel like Robert has entirely made amends on the subject of not treating her anywhere near as well as she deserves. Still, Cora also does have to share a little bit of responsibility for what happened in the whole Simon Bricker fiasco, given that she did not do very much at all to dissuade him from advancing upon their “friendship.” Then again, can you blame her? It was someone who was treating her as a genuine equal, and not just a wealthy woman of the house.
Ultimately, we do not expect to see either Michelle Dockery or Elizabeth McGovern departing the show anytime soon. Both are important cast members, and while we know that McGovern in particular has found a passion in music, doing the show in a way helps to balance out her schedule, and give her a tremendous platform. Dockery has already said that she will never leave the series.
“Downton Abbey” was already renewed for a season 6, so don’t spend the next few months worrying that you will not be returning to this world again.
