‘Ink Master: Rivals’, season 5, episode 11 review: Was Joshua Hibbard kicked off for breaking rules?
Last week on “Ink Master: Rivals” we lost our very last female contestant in Emily Elegado (you can check out our interview with her here), so now it’s a battle between the remaining men for who will win the title. We still see a final 2 between Cleen Rock One and Joshua Hibbard, but tonight has us a little worried for Joshua after the preview for this episode revealed that some of the other artists think that Joshua is “cheating” in the competition. Is this really true or just clever editing from the masterminds behind the show?
Flash challenge: The artists will be focusing on their ability to use finesse and a big part of that is how you work with your canvas. This week the remaining contestants will be tattooing amputees, which requires a lot of finesse as this can be a sensitive area to tattoo, and there are some pretty intense story behind the loss of their limb. Tattooing on the residual limb can be difficult as there can be a lot of scar tissue which is not always easy to tattoo.
Don has been fairly invisible this season when it comes to screen time with all of the huge personalities in the house, but we learned this week that he was hit by a teenager that was texting and driving leaving him paralyzed on the street and not knowing if he would ever walk again, so this tattoo is a little more personal for him.
Aaron has the biggest challenge as his canvas’ residual limb is shaking uncontrollably, and we hear the canvas not only apologize, but also say that he doesn’t want to screw up Aaron’s chances in the game with this piece. This was such a sweet moment and the first time that we can remember ever hearing a canvas worried about the artist.
There were some really nice tattoos, but we were a little disappointed to see that Cris moved the shark eating his canvas’ limb to higher up, when everyone else tattooed exactly what the canvas wanted exactly where they wanted. It was tough for the judges to pick a winner (tough for us too!), but the win went to Erik. We would’ve given this win to Joshua for that crazy beautiful fire tattoo, but Erik’s tattoo was fantastic as well.
Rule breaker: So it has been hyped up all week that Joshua was breaking a rule on “Ink Master” and we’ve been dying to know what he possibly could’ve done. It’s against the rules of the shows to smoke pot, but apparently he brought some to the show to help with his anxiety and the other artists are not okay with it… not because he’s smoking pot, but because it is against the rules of the show. How will this all play out? Joshua says that he surprised that this is such a big deal and it’s an interesting situation since the other artists didn’t bring this up as an issue until this deep into the competition.
Elimination tattoo: While still testing finesse, they artists will be tattooing a very sensitive and painful area… the spine. All of the canvases want the same tattoo as another canvas so there is a head to head component to this challenge. Erik paired up the remaining rivals, which was fun to see as well as a few other interesting choices like Cris and Cleen.
Judging: There were some really great tattoos tonight, but the person that blew us away was Aaron – such a gorgeous tattoo. Cleen Rock One’s Helix tattoo was also out of this world, absolutely beautiful. During judging Joshua decided to come clean to the judges about his pot smoking. He apologized to everyone and asked for a second chance to continue competing, but the judges said that it was out of their hands (meaning that they would have to consult with the producers).
Everyone was called back to the judging room with Cris being called out by the human canvas jury. Joshua’s pot smoking came into play tonight and his choice to bring pot to the show was against the contract he signed and he was sent home.
We know that we don’t get to see everything that was aired concerning this situation and it seemed that the other artists may have used Joshua’s pot smoking as a way to get him out of the competition, but at the same time Joshua handed them the ammunition. We get that breaking the rules has consequences, but at the same time it was heart breaking to see Joshua go home without the title. Episode grade: B

always entertaining and a great tattooer; josh was all but guaranteed to be in final three (cleen was the only one i had ahead of him). but if he signed a contract saying it was prohibited, he’s a moron of the highest order to risk 100,000 on something as trivial as smoking some weed.

Josh was clearly head and shoulders above the rest of the contestants and was on his way to winning the title of Inkmaster. How come none of the other contestants had a problem with his smoking until this later in the competition? I, for one, will NOT be watching the rest of the season ….

You won’t find anyone more pro cannabis than myself. Josh knew the rules, and he broke them. Cannabis is fantastic for anxiety, and calming the nerves. It would be tremendous asset in such a high pressure situation as what they are put through in Ink Master. Does it make him a better artist? Hard to say. A lot of artist claim that it really opens creative doors for them. Performance enhancing? Once again, it’s hard to say. Keeping yourself calm, and relaxed in a high pressure situation can certainly be an advantage.
Either way no matter which side of the fence you stand on, the rules are the rules. He knew what he was risking. Great artist although I didn’t care for his personality. Shame to see him booted out for using cannabis, but I wonder how many of the other contestants might have benefited from some cannabis to help them that got booted before this all came down.
It’s a can of worms I’m sure they wished was never opened. If it were up to me cannabis use would not be terms for disqualification. Hell, I’d actively encourage it’s use! The thing is though is that it has to be available or an option for everyone, not just the rule breakers. Sorry dude.

IMO smoking pot doesn’t make u a better totooer/artist ..I used to smoke it everyday for medical reasons and im no artist smoking or not, Josh is a fabulous artist regardless of what he smokes and its a shame he was booted off the show!!!

Now that The Ink Master of this season, aka Josh is gone, these losers can compete amongst their peers. Pathetic.

Little narc fcuks on on the show. The only reason the other artist were upset was because they all knew they could not beat Josh. Everyone of the got a. Boner went Josh went home.

How ever you want to look at it Josh broke the contract he signed. He called out Jason for not handling his anxiety & he had to smoke pot to handle his. He made his choice and paid the price. Fair decision.

I have been a huge fan of the show for 5 seasons. If I can’t see the show when it is on, it’s recorded. Sad I won’t get to watch the rest of it due to protest against the producers cutting the best tattooist.

It seems pretty sketchy that the artists have waited this long to say something. I expected Josh to win, or be second. Despite his arrogance, I’d let him tattoo me, and I don’t even want a tattoo! Head high, Josh.

Josh claimed that he didn’t use the pot to give himself an edge, but in a previous episode, he was making snide comments re: Jason fighting his anxiety. Well, Josh fought his by breaking the rules. He probably is the best tattoo artist, but he still a cheat.

I think the other artists know that Josh smoking pot had no bearing on how well he is doing. They want him out because they know he was winning. not because he smoked pot. . Josh made a stupid mistake and he is paying the price, but he is the best and he would have been Inkmaster. I won’t be watching the rest of this season because I don’t like any of the others . they are mean and ,disgusting especially arrogant Cleen who is good, but not as good as Josh. As far as I am concerned, whoever wins is not really the best. Josh is the best. Josh won’t get the money, but he is Inkmaster.

How does it feel to piss away a hundred grand? Not because it’s bad, because of a lack of integrity.

So he smokes pot. Wouldnt be suprised if Dave or the other judges do too. Maybe if it was legal in the state But unfortunatly he broke the rules nobody else there to win.

Agreed, big deal he smokes a little now and then. Who cares? BUT when a person gives their word, as in writing, they should keep it! It’s called integrity, something that seems to be very hard to find today.

Seriously I pity the person who never broke a rule in her/his life because they are probably living a pretty boring one.

It’s not about breaking a rule, it’s about keeping your word, something that seems unimportant anymore.

I think what bother you is not the fact that he did not keep his word. It can happen to everybody to break a promise, or to cancel something at the last minute. The problem here is that it appears Joshua never intended to respect the contract from the very start. Still the way they presented it in the show the other contestants look like they don’t even want to discuss it. Even if it clearly gave no advantage to Joshua. Apparently some more elements were to be considered but from what is shown I am on the Portland artist side.

It does bother me that he didn’t keep his word, and as you pointed out, he didn’t intent to, which amplifies his position as a liar.
