NBC gives ‘The Mysteries of Laura’ full season
There is no mystery here at all: NBC wants more Laura on their network for at least the rest of the season.
The network officially confirmed that they have brought on “The Mysteries of Laura” for a full season, and it comes after it has performed decently over the first few weeks of the season. Ultimately, this is a show that may cause the network to have a little bit of trouble and controversy about a little ways down the road. After all, it gets a very impressive total viewership that blows away most other scripted fare on the network, but it is not anywhere near as successful in the all-important 18-49 demographic. If the network cancels it, then they run into some of that obvious “ageist” criticism that NBC had previously when they cast aside “Harry’s Law,” which was in a pretty similar situation after its second season.
Hopefully, we will get a better sense of where the needle will go for Debra Messing and company as we get deeper into the season, and some of the audience is through fluctuating. This is something that tends to happen early on in the season, and then changes once you get into February.
This move also does provide some further evidence to a theory that many in the industry have had as of late: Networks may not be very confident with their midseason fare this year, given that they are not being very quick to cancel shows. “Manhattan Love Story” is still the only thing on any of the major networks that is off the air, though we feel like “Utopia” is going to be next on the docket moving forward.
