CBS’ ‘CSI: Las Vegas’ season 15, episode 5 review: Does Julie Finlay have a new boyfriend?
“CSI: Las Vegas” started season 15 off with a bang when it gave us a really juicy story about Russell. We saw that he may have put Jared Briscoe behind bars and on death row for murders that he didn’t commit since there seems to be a killer still on the loose (is it his twin brother Paul?). If Jared is put to death and he was innocent, Paul is making it his mission to make a public example out of Russell and end his career. Sounds like a pretty good story, no? Unfortunately there has been little to no movement on it (last week’s episode was about witches), but if you want a story that involves our main cast then this week’s episode is for you.
This week, the ladies of CSI (Julie, Sara and Morgan) are enjoying a little break from the every day swing of things. Their lives are stressful to say the least, so a little sunshine, spa treatment and champagne by the poolside is in order (even though technically they are at a conference and kinda working.)
We thought that Julie was involved with Daniel Shaw, but when she runs into a man she knows (Mark) at the conference (who has some serious chemistry with her), she happily accepts his offer to go out for a drink. Seems he’s a man that Julie met at a conference years ago and then they “spend some quality time” together” every time they meet up at the conference (which works out to roughly once a year).
Sara meets up with an old rival at the conference, a woman named Dr. Jane Snyder that she used to work with in San Francisco as criminalists until Jane switched sides as an expert witness for the defense and skewered one of Sara’s trainees (she also helped a rapist be set free). Although Sara just wants to avoid her like the plague, Morgan signed them up to go to her lecture before knowing about their history.
The men on the other hand are stuck at the lab dealing with swampy, decomposing human remains. They definitely got the short end of the stick this time…. or did they? When someone opens fire at Dr. Jane’s presentation the ladies are immediately back on the clock. Although Julie was not at the conference, she felt the affects of the shooting as the shooter opened fire on her and Mark when their elevator door opened, leaving Mark injured. With SWAT doing a sweep of the building for the shooter, the elevator is left unusable as Mark bleeds out, and needing a hospital. Once the elevator is back in service Mark is transported to the hospital and he’s going to be fine. More then that Mark is going to be staying in the area for a while and Julie suggests that they try actually dating and see what happens, which he happily accepts. Is Mark going to turn into Julie’s boyfriend?
After taking down the shooter we learn that his wife and daughter was killed by a man that had previously stood trial from a similar incident, but was released due to Jane Snyder’s testimony. Not only that, but there is actually another shooter still on the loose and this person wants to take out law enforcement over putting him in jail – and his target is Sara since she was on the team that put him away. SWAT shows up in time and saves her from his wrath and all is good in the world of CSI… until next time.
It was great to have an episode that focuses on our team, because as much as we like the “crime of the week” model, we care about the team and love it when they are more involved. Episode grade: A-
