‘Saturday Night Live’ review: Daisy Rose, Drunk Uncle, Lincoln commercial, Jeff Daniels in Jim Carrey show

SNL -Tonight, “Saturday Night Live” put on a show hosted by Jim Carrey that could have gone many different ways. It wouldn’t have been a shock for it to be a complete disaster, but at the same time, there was hope for it to be brilliant.

What we got in the end was a combination of the two. There were some funny moments, some really original ones, and then some duds. We at least like and appreciate that there were some risks taken in here as a whole.

The good sketches

Obama cold open – Here we go with another Obama cold open. We’ve never really liked these, but we did actually enjoy Taran Killam in here a lot! Also, this is the best way to use Al Sharpton. You have him around for around 45 seconds or so, he leaves, and you never get tired of him.

Lincoln commercial – We have been waiting for someone to make fun of these creepy Matthew McConaughey ads for so long, and we cannot express just how happy we are that they are in this show. We were happy this continued throughout the show, and at one point even including the AllState man to boot.

Paul and Phil – We liked this probably way more than we should have, but it was just a delightful little twist on the whole “singing graveyard” bit that seems to be in every Halloween special to ever air on the Disney Channel. Bobby Moynihan dominated as one of the graves.

Weekend Update – The first few jokes were a little lacking, but by the time we met Vanessa Bayer’s Daisy Rose, we were on the floor. This is up there with Leslie Jones’ “character” and Jebidiah Atkinson as one of the best ones that the show has right now. Adding an appearance from Drunk Uncle at the end for the first time this season certainly did not hurt.

Chandelier video – We surprisingly loved this the moment that Jim Carrey and Kate McKinnon went down into the studio, and started to do their bizarre Sia interpretative dance around everyone from Lorne Michaels to Iggy Azalea, dressed in the outfit. There was a whole lot to smile about by the end of this.

The ones we’d rather forget about

Jim Carrey monologue – What was the point of this? This was a huge production just to listen to Carrey go on and on about pecan pie while dressed as Elvis wearing horns … just so that we could actually see him be tricked at the end with lemon pie. Pretty useless, and not really funny.

The Carreys – We really wanted to like this, but the problem is that unless you are absolutely insanely devoted to Carrey’s work on various films over the years, this probably just got annoying really quick. The inevitable Jeff Daniels cameo did help to left it somewhat from the abyss at the end.

Secret Billionaire – Not particularly funny, and instead, one of the more annoying sketches of the night. Even the premise here was flawed, given that we were just meant to be impressed at Jim Carrey’s crazy character, but we never even found out who among the contenders was actually the secret billionaire.

Zombie Sketch – Pete Davidson basically got to play a zombie. Good for hum. Seriously, the twist of him eating his father (Carrey) at the end could be telegraphed from beyond a mile away.

Ghost Hunters – Pretty forgettable, and mostly tarnished by the laugh track that was going out of control over Leslie Jones’ lines. We’re glad to see her on the show, but she needs more to do than this.

Halloween store – The only reason we hated this was that seeing Cecily Strong and Bayer in these two roles reminded us of their more “adult”-oriented sketch that they did often at the end of last year’s show.

Overall, we feel like tonight’s show was made somewhat memorable thanks to around three or four sketches that we really loved, but the number that were flat-out bad drags it down to mediocrity. Grade: B-.
