CBS’ ‘CSI: Las Vegas’ season 15, episode 4 review: Bella Thorne, witches and chemistry
Last week on “CSI: Las Vegas” we didn’t have much movement on the main story arc this season involving Russell, Jared Briscoe, his twin Paul and the idea that Russell may have put the wrong man in jail based more on revenge then actual proof which could unravel his entire life if Jared is actually put to death over this crime. Are we going to see any more movement on this story tonight?
The case of the week involves guest star Bella Thorne as a popular high school girl, Hannah, who witnesses a horrific murder when a chemistry teacher, Chet Messner, burns to death in front of all of the students. Although many people in the school hold this teacher in high regards, it seems that he has a secret – he’s a witch. The group was trying to do a banishment spell on Chet after he started speaking out on witchcraft and the coven wanted to keep things private, but is this a reason to kill him?
Chet was also making steroids in his chemistry lab and selling to the football team. Seems that this teacher has no money and that’s why he started making and selling drugs (sound familiar ? “Breaking Bad” anyone?) Hannah was one of the students using the drug and quickly becomes a suspect for murdering the chemistry teacher (and the quarterback, Rob), but she says that Rob had attacked her and she was getting help for it, not murdering people. Turns out Hannah’s story is true and she is cleared of murdering everyone.
It turns out that with the help of Ed (the Janitor) and Rebecca (another witch), they create a spell to try and save her son’s life from cancer. She accidentally killed Messner, while trying to kill Rob because she needed his blood for the healing ritual – the blood of a strong youth. With his mother being carted off to jail, her son, Mason, is left homeless until Hannah and her parents offer up their home to him.
We were hoping to get a little more movement on the Jared Briscoe case, but outside of Russell looking at a pin board with Jared’s picture on it we were left high and dry. Episode grade: C-

I found the “deadly virus” episode disturbing. Life imitating art, or vice versus. With the Ebola scare I wonder at the timing of airing it at all. Love CSI, NCIS, the genre.

I’m fine with the lack of movement on the over arc of the Gig Harbor killer. Thrilled as I am for a new ongoing villain, like the Miniature killer and Nate Haskell, those things are far less impactful when the writers insist on shoving them down your throat every single episode. Something CSI has never done, and shouldn’t start doing.
Thus far, season fifteen is turning out well for me. Though next episode looks like another scare for who might die… Just had one last week with the virus take off. I enjoyed it after I knew everything was okay, but I can’t take one every single week. CSI’s really the only thing on TV I still care about enough to follow; PLEASE don’t mess it up, right as it’s getting back to its pre-Danson-and-Shue level of enjoyability.
