‘Faking It’ season 2, episode 4 review: Did Laverne Cox make Karma’s day?

When it comes to getting some big-name guest stars “Faking It” Tuesday night succeeded mightily in getting someone from one of the hottest shows out there in “Orange Is the New Black.” As the impossible-to-please theater instructor, Laverne Cox was ultimately a whole lot of fun. While her future on the show is unclear, it was still nice to see her here.

Unfortunately, she did not end up allowing Karma to reap a whole lot of benefits from her instruction … other than maybe learning the value of honesty. As a way to become a better actor, Karma eventually admitted that she faked being a lesbian to be popular. What she left out was the whole part that revolved around Amy having feelings in turn for her, and how this put the two of them in an extremely awkward situation.

Speaking of awkward situations, Amy spent almost the entire episode with Liam, where she tried to convince him that not telling Karma the truth about their infamous night together is better for everyone in the long run. In turn, we finally learned more about this guy’s family, and after seeing how repressed he is there, we actually sympathize with him more as a character. While it’s still hard to root for him with Karma, we also do not loathe him in the way that we once did.

Still, we wish that there was more humor in this half-hour, given that this show is technically still a comedy when the dust settles. Maybe we’re closer to the truth about Amy and Liam coming out (even if it doesn’t seem that way right now); the part of this that we are mostly surprised by is just that Amy and Karma, despite being the two main characters, barely spent any time at all together. Maybe that’ll change next week. Grade: B-.
