‘American Horror Story: Freak Show’: Clown organization angry with Twisty
“American Horror Story: Freak Show” has freaked out many a viewer already with their new villain Twisty the Clown, and he is certainly contributing to some of the fears that people have out there about clowns.
To an extent, we’ve already been somewhat frustrated with this particular fear, at least in the context of that it’s almost become trendy to be afraid of clowns over the years. There are those who genuinely are afraid, and then also those who just want to be afraid for whatever reason.
Well, regardless of whatever you feel about Twisty, the one thing we do know at the moment is that the organization Clowns of America International (it really exists) is not too happy about the villain. Per The Hollywood Reporter, their President Glenn Kohlberger had the following to say:
“Hollywood makes money sensationalizing the norm … They can take any situation no matter how good or pure and turn it into a nightmare.
“… We do not support in any way, shape or form any medium that sensationalizes or adds to coulrophobia or ‘clown fear.'”
Obviously, we understand how professional clowns will feel about the character. If people do develop coulrophobia as a result of watching this show, they lose work. It’s simple as that. Honestly, we really like clowns. At the same time, we understand why they are made out to be scary a ton of the time. They’re an easy target, different from the norm, and there is only so much that you can do with them when it comes to having them be silly or happy-go-lucky entertainers.
We only wish that it was easier for many to differentiate the silly characters, and the terrifying ones you occasionally see on-screen.
