MTV’s ‘Awkward’ renewed for season 5, will be final season
We have been writing about a possible end for “Awkward” for some time, and it felt like the message was on the wall here for a long time: There will be a fifth season for the MTV comedy, but that will also be its last.
The timeline of the show is one of the reasons that this move makes some sense, at least for the time being. There is little reason logically to continue telling this story right now, given that Jenna Hamilton and the rest of the characters will move on from Palos Hills, and go do other things with their careers. This also means that Ashley Rickards, Brett Davern, and the rest of the cast can go on to find other opportunities in TV and film.
Creatively, this also feels like the right move. Without creator Lauren Iungerich on board, the show has lost a little bit of its pizzazz. We don’t feel like it is a terrible show now, but it feels more like you are watching an “Awkward” copy versus the real thing. That is somewhat of a bummer, since this was at one point arguably one of our three favorite comedies on the air. We were even pulling to see Rickards get an Emmy nomination.
Hopefully, this final season will touch on Jenna’s graduation, and give us at least some sense of where her life will be going next.
What do you think about the renewal news, and do you think it’s only fitting that season 5 is the last based on where we are right now?
