NBC’s ‘Hannibal’: Season 3 will not begin until April, May 2015
It looks like we are not going to have an opportunity to look forward to “Hannibal” in February again. Show creator Bryan Fuller, during an interview on the Dinner Party Show podcast, made it clear this week that we are looking at a premiere date that will be at the earliest in April 2015.
Why the long wait? The easiest guess for that is just that this is what NBC’s schedule is dictating, but there may be other benefits for this late start time. Maybe this gives the show greater flexibility for actors like Gillian Anderson and Laurence Fishburne, who are balancing out this show with others, such as “The Fall” and “Black-ish.”
At this point, we almost want to make a controversial statement and say that we’d prefer the show air out of the season versus premiering in April, where it would go head-to-head against everything else during the May sweeps. In the summer, maybe it could pull a slightly better live audience.
We know that the show is not a ratings monster by any means, but we do have a little faith that at some point in the future, it could end up becoming more popular. Just look at some shows like “Breaking Bad” or “Sons of Anarchy,” who have leveraged their quality into higher ratings over time. We just wish that this show in particular was on a service like Netflix rather than Amazon Prime, just for the sake of increased exposure. It will probably still get it, anyway, largely because it is that good.
