‘Sons of Anarchy’ season 7, episode 1 preview: What to expect from ‘Black Widower’
Tomorrow night, the waiting will finally be over for fans of “Sons of Anarchy.” The season 7 premiere will be here, and “Black Widower” has a significant challenge before it in setting the tone for the final episodes, and start to give us that sense of finality. This story has been building to something, and hopefully that is an epic conclusion.
Let’s start here with some of the factual details about the episode. Given that creator Kurt Sutter penned it and Paris Barclay (who has directed multiple premieres now) is behind the helm, we’re not worried about the tone, the characters, or anything of that capacity. If there are flaws in the arc, they will turn up later in the season.
In terms of run time, get yourself an energy drink on the way home tomorrow. You’ll need it after staying up to watch everything. We’re almost hesitant at this point to give a run time, mostly because the show is almost changing the construct of how you watch TV in terms of episode length. If you don’t know how long the show runs precisely, it enables you better to be surprised about every turn. Just expect the show to go well beyond the typical hour (plus commercials) most other shows receive.
Here are a few other important story-related things to note:
- Jax Teller will start off the episode in prison, but the photos from FX have already given away that he will not stay there forever.
- Drea de Matteo was promoted to series regular for a reason. Expect to see a great deal of Wendy.
- Violence has become a huge part of the “Sons of Anarchy” culture, and within the first half of the premiere, you’ll feel right back at home with it (even if it is a thoroughly disturbing home).
- Juice is in a bad way going into this season. So is Gemma, but she is at least a little more stable than Juice is. (That’s not saying much, though.)
- You should receive updates on many of the important characters within the time that the premiere is on the air.
We’ll have our full review for “Black Widower” online tomorrow after the episode wraps, so be on the lookout for that. (Bookmark the link here!) Also, you can sign up in the event you want some other TV updates from us at CarterMatt via our newsletter.
