‘Royal Pains’ season 7: Did season 6 finale ratings improve renewal odds?

Thanks to Labor Day Weekend, it took us a little longer than usual to get some of the final ratings together for the “Royal Pains” finale on Tuesday night. After seeing them, though, we must admit that we just as concerned as ever on the future of the show.

Only 1.78 million viewers caught the final episode of the season Tuesday entitled “Ganging Up,” which was tied for the least-watched episode of the show ever. Were people really that turned off by the Khloe Kardashian cameo? We’re joking there, mostly because the ratings have been down across the board all year on a significant level. The finale itself had less than half the viewership of the season 5 finale, which is an indictment on either the direction of the show, the lack of promotion away from USA (a network that had a pretty poor summer outside of “Suits”), or both.

Personally, we’ve long felt like the show was underrated, and a great source of summer fun. We’re just worried about its future now with these sort of noticeable drops versus past years. It also felt like the finale was shaped to work as a possible end to the series in some ways; Hank was happy, Evan and Paige were moving forward, Jeremiah and Divya were on good terms, and Boris didn’t collapse, which we totally thought was going to happen based on events a little earlier in the episode. Even the future of HankMed appears relatively stable.

We’ll still be crossing our fingers that there is still enough success here for USA to give us at least another season; if nothing else, they were good with giving closure to “White Collar,” “Psych,” and “Burn Notice” in the past two years.
