‘Falling Skies’ season 4 finale review: Who died, and is there hope for Tom, 2nd Mass?
Tonight, “Falling Skies” wrapped up season 4 with a two-hour spectacular that hopefully made you wash away some of your doubts about the early part of this season.
The biggest theme of these two episode to us was strictly redemption, especially for the character of Lexi. Tom didn’t trust her through most of the story recently, and understandably so. The finale, however, was a way for the two parties to finally start to get on the same page again thanks to some big sacrifices (and the reveal of some insecurities to boot). In an effort to ensure that Tom could get back to the rest of the 2nd Mass safely, she volunteered to stay behind. The end of Lexi came just at the time when everyone was starting to actually like her, and that is the irony of it all.
The good news? Lexi’s end was certainly not in vain, given that for the first time in years, the people on Earth actually can breathe a little easier. Think of it as a temporary victory. Not everything is completely over yet, though, and maybe that is one of the larger cliffhangers here … but not on the same level as Tom calling a mystery individual “beautiful” while trapped in a model room. Is it his wife? A new alien? Someone else? Many mysteries right now.
Also in this episode, Pope kinda-sorta showed that he is a good person. We like it when that happens from time to time.
In the end, we feel like this was the ending that season 4 really need for the final season to work. The 2nd Mass is not even remotely out of the woods just yet, but we do at least feel more confident right now that the story is heading in the right direction, and there is a reason to feel like these people are going to be able to get out of this somehow by the time the story ends. Grade: B+.
