2014 MTV VMAs: Robin Williams tribute draws divided reaction online

VMAs -

Tonight, the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards decided that they were going to honor Robin Williams, but what was polarizing to many was more of the way that they chose to highlight him.

Right in the middle of the show, which contained craziness, twerking, performances, and an awkward segment or two with Jay Pharoah, the show decided then to air a brief video montage to honor Robin Williams.

We feel like ultimately, the heart of the show producers was in the right place by choosing to include this as a part of the show. At the same time, though, there was nothing about the execution that felt right. It was clear that this was just wedged in here as the first awards show to air since Williams passed away, and they had no real plan for how to put it into the show.

We love Robin Williams, and he was one of our heroes growing up when it comes to TV and film. We laughed at almost everything that he did. With that being said, we would not have been that offended had this tribute not been a part of the VMAs. Williams was never really know for his work in music of all things, even if he did do a few performances in “Aladdin” as the Genie.

Instead, we know that there is a significant tribute coming up tomorrow at the Emmys, and this is what we are looking forward to more than anything else.

What do you think about the tribute, and do you appreciate the sentiment regardless of the execution? Share in the comments, and head over here to see our other updates from the awards! You can also sign up now to get some additional TV scoop on all we cover via our CarterMatt Newsletter.
