‘Hell on Wheels’ season 4 premiere even more impressive with DVR numbers
The good news for “Hell on Wheels” keeps coming in this week when it comes to DVR viewing. The show has basically become the second-most-successful program they are airing right now behind “The Walking Dead” (it is out-performing “Mad Men” at the moment, at least in total viewers), and it also managed to keep all of its audience intact from one year to the next … despite airing on a night previously thought of as the “death spot.”
We reported earlier in the week how the series was almost even with the season 3 premiere when it comes to live + same-day viewers; now that we’ve seen the live + 3 data (which includes DVR viewings for three days after the show premiered), it’s just about even with both last year’s premiere and finale.
With 3.6 million viewers with the new data included, the show is about level with last year, and there is much more potential for growth. Speaking per Deadline, AMC head Charlie Collier made it pretty clear how happy he is:
“We saw a strategic opportunity for Hell on Wheels on the toughest night of the week for TV, and now the show has grown two years in a row in this new slot.”
We’re not going to sit here and toot the victory horn just yet, mostly because people still need to watch the rest of the season for “Hell on Wheels” to really guarantee another season. With that being said, we certainly expect a renewal if the ratings stay constant throughout the rest of the fall. The only other hits AMC has coming up on their docket, at least per expectations, are “Better Call Saul” and that mysterious “Walking Dead” spin-off that’s been in development for a long time now.
