‘Downton Abbey’ season 5 spoilers: Laura Carmichael on Edith’s tricky situation

More news -Downton Abbey” season 4 was at least at first, the season all about Mary’s sadness. The more we hear about season 5 now, and the more we start to think that Edith is going to be in the spotlight this time around for similar reasons. Just look at what she went through this past season; it’s impossible not to think this!

Will the character ever find a way to get out of this terribly dark situation? This is something that Laura Carmichael discussed in what was largely an Emmy-related interview with HitFix. While she did not touch on every facet of the story ahead, she did at least suggest that for the time being, keeping a secret about her child from her family will be the hardest part:

“It’s a tricky place. She’s on a knife-edge. And the thing that I think it makes this situation even worse, which sounds not-too-exciting is that nobody really knows. Even though she’s having a horrible time and Gregson’s disappeared and her child is separated from her, in the country but not living with her, the family have no idea. So it’s like a private pain, which only sort of adds to that, ‘Oh pull yourself together Edith’ kind of attitude from the family. So it’s a lovely story. I mean the arc is great, but it’s not a great place. In the same way that Mary last year, they’ve done that. You knew that coming into Season 4 that Mary was going to be under a cloud. And I think in Season 5 Edith will be.”

We’ll always continue to root for Edith, mostly because we’ve long found her to be one of the show’s more endearing characters. However, we feel like coming clean eventually is imperative to her character’s future. Whether it be out of shame or just out of a desire to keep this part of her life to herself, she’s going to have to find a way to get over this if she wants to truly move forward.
