‘Arrow’ season 3: First look at Brandon Routh with Emily Bett Rickards
“Arrow” wasted no time this summer in announcing the first major guest star for season 3, and also letting it be known that he is someone in Brandon Routh who has a history of doing some rather super stuff already.
In the photo below via Emily Bett Rickards’ Instagram page, you can at least take a quick look at the man sort-of in action. Eventually, he will become the hero that is otherwise known as The Atom, and serve as a love interest of sorts to Felicity.
Already, we’ve read a variety of reactions to this image that are all sorts of reactions about whether or not there is chemistry, whether Routh is a good cast, and so on. For now, our reaction is this: How in the world do you know? Can you figure out anything thanks to a photo on a social-networking site? If you actually have a strong opinion on this right now one way or another, it’s probably due to feelings going into it. We understand that, and we say that as an Oliver / Felicity fan.
But, we’re going to give the story the benefit of the doubt and see where it goes. We though Routh was great on “Chuck,” and we haven’t quite felt like Oliver has done enough to really earn Felicity’s affection just yet. She’s pursued him, and it may be the time for him to realize that he has feelings and to be the pursuer. Otherwise, the relationship won’t have that balance.

I’m really curious as to when Felicity pursued Oliver. I just can’t think of a single time when this has happened. Has she made comments hinting to a crush on him? Yes. But it’s Oliver who said he can’t be with someone he could really care about–hinting about Felicity. It’s Oliver who acted like an ass over Barry–several times, first by having him investigated and calling him out in front of Felicity, and then when he bit Felicity’s head off and blamed it on her being distracted over Barry’s condition. It’s Oliver who gave the not-so-fake declaration of love which Felicity believed for a second and DID NOT SAY BACK. I completely agree, Oliver doesn’t deserve Felicity yet. But I do not see a single instance of Felicity pursuing him. There is a difference between having a crush on someone and pursuing them, and Felicity has not done the latter.
