‘Rising Star’ review: Gabrielle Nicole, Macy Kate, April Lockhart, and controversy
We are closing in on the final rounds now of ABC’s “Rising Star,” and the show is probably only getting messier rather than more consistent. There were some major controversies that happened tonight with the voting, but the saddest thing of all is that there continues to be nothing that remarkable about the vocals. One of the favorites from the first round, after all, was a dud here.
Let it be known that these results are based on what happened on the East Coast. We can’t imagine too many major changes coming with the West Coast, but you never know…
Gabrielle Nicole vs. Macy Kate – This was the downfall of one of the greatest singers in the competition, but in the end Gabrielle really had no one to blame other than herself. Her attitude was just off-putting, and while that sort of swagger may work for tabloids, it’s not so effective on a singing show. Macy almost won here by default. Also, this may have shown the flaw in the system, as Macy’s fans likely voted “no” for Gabrielle. Winner: Macy Kate
April Lockhart vs. Sonnet Simmons – This battle was actually really close. We would’ve voted to support Sonnet if we were going just based on the auditions, but her tuning in this was just all over the place, and her unique voice doesn’t make up for it. April’s got a nice story, and she has a sense of creativity about her music. Winner. April.
Austin French vs. Adam Jaymes – Austin is a pretty good singer, but also more than just a little bit dull and vanilla. Still, he managed to find a way to perform better than Adam, and move on. You’d think, though, that the show would put something more exciting at the end of the episode. Winner: Austin.

Disappointed

Gabrielle put on a great performance, clearly a winner in my book. Macy’s voice was typical “I wanna be a star” sounding voice, nothing special here, and her and the next girl couldn’t sing on pitch, so I turned it off. To show how fake the show is, none of the judges even mentioned that the two following girls couldn’t sing ALL her notes on key. As a musician I can’t watch this because it seems the fans perfer blonds over a real singer. Very disappointing.
