‘Downton Abbey’ season 5: John Oliver’s a joker (but not a viewer)
Sadly, it appears that “Downton Abbey” is going to have to live without the hope that British comic John Oliver ever watches their show. We cannot imagine how they will ever move on past this (cue sarcasm), but they will most-likely find a way.
These not-so-shocking but still funny comments came from the “Last Week Tonight” host during his recent appearance on PBS, which happens to be the same network that broadcasts the show in America. Specifically, he claimed that the reason he does not tune in to them is because of some supposedly-traumatic times with the TV as a child:
“Those kind of shows were the bane of my childhood because period dramas about uptight British people destroyed by the class system, struggling to say the things they feel were the shows that were on nonstop when I was a kid when I wanted to watch cartoons.”
As with most of Oliver’s comments, we find this to be more insightful when watching the video below than we do upon actually reading the text. He has become a sort of ambassador in a way when it comes to mocking British culture, or at least the parts of it he considers to be relevant or silly. He did this on multiple occasions on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” and has brought a little bit over to his own show so far.
Even if they never have Oliver as a viewer, “Downton Abbey” has such an enormous audience that they will most likely not care. The show is seen by millions upon millions of people across the globe; it’s hard to calculate the exact number, but you can almost guarantee at this point that at least a hundred million people have seen at least one episode of the show since it began.
