‘Switched at Birth’ season 3: Gilles Marini on Angelo shocker, impact on show’s future

Switched at Birth -
A look inside the shocker.

Obviously, we start this “Switched at Birth” article with a massive spoiler warning: If you haven’t watched the new episode of the show that aired Monday night, stop reading this right now!

Given that you are still here if you are reading this, let’s dive into some more insight into the shocking death of Angelo. Gilles Marini was a huge part of the show, and the departure of his character now is really going to change the lives of Bay, Daphne, and really everyone else forever. In the end, though, he feels like it was the right time for him to leave given his time spent with the program, and the need creatively for the show to continue to shake things up. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he explained that the death scenes were “something that [he] needed” as an actor, and also went into how he feels like Angelo’s exit is going to shape the lives of the girls moving forward:

“When I lost my dad I was kind of the same age that the girls [Bay and Daphne] are on the show. It’s very simple. You either stand up and you become the man or the woman you will be the rest of your life, or you derail and you go toward things that you should maybe not go toward. Who’s going to be the one who says, ‘I forgive you,’ to what Regina did prior [to Angelo’s death]. How Daphne’s going to react to the loss of the father she wanted to have. All those things are going to come down the pipe. The show needed to have something dramatic and I’m so happy it happens to my character, because I don’t see anybody else going down that road and having that kind of impact. We needed to tie up something that’s meaningful enough that makes the show interesting. You needed to have that happen.”

We are going to miss Marini, given that we’ve seen a lot of him over the years on both this show and “Dancing with the Stars” and know him to be a likable, interesting guy. The show won’t quite be the same without him.
