‘Masters of Sex’ season 2, episode 1 review: Virginia, Bill come to an understanding

Masters of Sex -Last season on “Masters of Sex” we were left staring in the face of a huge cliffhanger when it came to what happens next with Virginia and Bill. He showed up at her house in the middle of the night basically declaring his love for her (but in a very Bill Masters way of course). So what happened next?

Virginia invited Bill into her bedroom and they spent the night together, and when Ethan called her, she ended their relationship and turned down his marriage proposal. It was a little shocking to see her so confident in her decision since Bill never said he loved her, or that he was leaving his wife to be with her.  In fact when Virginia later suggested that what she and Bill have with one another was bigger then just some “pedestrian” affair, he tried to tell her that coming to her house and continuing to sleep with her is all in the name of the study and that he is a happily married man (which everyone knows is a big fat lie.)

We weren’t sure how much of Barton and Margaret we were going to see now that Bill is no longer at the hospital (although now Bill has another job offer at another hospital thanks to the pretzel king making a huge donation with some Bill Masters strings attached), but they had a pretty rough go of things. Barton had been having shock treatment to try to “cure” himself, but it wasn’t really working, so instead he decided to try to commit suicide. Luckily Margaret and their daughter found him before he could complete his task. This show wouldn’t be the same without Barton and Margaret and we are looking forward to a deeper level of understanding between these two in their marriage now.

Over all this was a pretty good premiere – nothing too shocking happened and Bill Masters pattern of acting impulsive and then back peddling is still going strong. There were some solid story lines mapped out for the season, but we were expecting a little more bang for our buck in tonight’s premiere. Episode grade: B-
