‘Orphan Black’ season 3 renewal official; Clone Club, commence celebration!

We wondered for quite a while why “Orphan Black” did not receive an early season 3 renewal given its improved ratings and also the critical acclaim, but we imagine that at the end of the day, what really matters is the official confirmation now that it is coming back for more.

There was probably not a whole lot of doubt about this at the end of the day, even if we continue to wonder why this took so long. A third season of the show has been officially ordered now, and is going to premiere at some point in the spring. Filming for the upcoming season with Tatiana Maslany and the cast will start in September, which is after she will hopefully make an appearance at the Emmys for the show. (Nominations when it comes to that will be announced tomorrow.)

How long can a show like this really last? It is a good question, since we do feel like something with both this quality and this crazy of a premise does have a little bit of a shelf life. Our feeling is that around five seasons or so should be the limit, that way you get everything you want without the feeling that the show is starting to show its age.

The biggest achievement that we’ll give the show’s second season, other than being awesome, is that it managed to show a solid improvement in the ratings even without the luxury of airing after “Doctor Who.” It didn’t have any sort of lead-in at all, and still succeeded in the end. It’s hard to be anything other than thrilled by that.
