‘Graceland’ season 2, episode 2 review: Jakes’ story shines through

Graceland -After a premiere that certainly brought the show back to its dark, gritty roots, “Graceland” came back on Wednesday night with an episode that was actually stronger when it slowed things down and kept it simple.

For example, we turn to Dale Jakes’ story. What he really wanted more than anything else was an opportunity to be with his son, only to realize not long after that his dreams would stay in his head. This lead to one of the most violent “destruction of property” scenes we’ve seen from a supposedly “good” character, and this was after he already was put into handcuffs.

As for the Mike mission, he and the rest of the team ended up being reasonably successful … at least to an extent. The struggle that he had about all else was trying to keep his focus when there were many distractions in that house … including of course Paige. Will this evolve into something that complicates the entire arrangement? We’re ruling for now “possibly.”

“Graceland” is so far this season proving to be one of those shows that you want to like a little more than you actually do. The action is fairly relentless and the performances are solid, but there just is something missing in regards to tone, as if it is trying a little too hard at times to be super-intense when it could use a little lightening up. There is just a tiny element of wit that “Suits” (a similarly serious show) has that it is still working to find. Luckily, it is still early in the season. Grade: B-.
