‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 11 spoilers: Why Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith could use a friend

When it rains, it pours, especially in the city of Seattle where “Grey’s Anatomy” is set. Therefore, you really cannot rule out things going from bad to worse for any of these characters in a short amount of time. Based on some of the reports coming out now, this is precisely what is going to happen when it comes to Meredith.

According to a new report from TV Guide, the upcoming 11th season is probably going to be one of the rockiest ones to date when it comes to her Ellen Pompeo’s character and her relationship with Derek … and it is pretty darn easy to understand why. If you look back to the finale, the argument between the two became somewhat close to nuclear as they each have a very specific vision in mind for what they want their careers to be. For Meredith, that includes staying in Seattle, while her husband is not so tied to the idea.

Typically, Meredith would have someone nearby to vent to about some of this sort of stuff, but she is not going to be anywhere near as lucky this time around. Thanks to Cristina’s departure, she is now also out a confidante. Maybe Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) ends up sticking around and she can become Cristina 2.0, but there is no replacement for the passion, the honesty, or the dancing that Sandra Oh brought to the series.

Regardless of whatever happens between Meredith and Derek, don’t expect it to be something that takes one of them away from the show for good. Both Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey have deals that are going to keep them around until at least the 12th season.
