MTV’s ‘Awkward’ season 4, episode 7 review: Matty and Jake’s wrong turn

Awkward -So far, “Awkward” season 4 has been a little hit and miss in that the show has changed greatly from what it originally was, and there have been moments with so much exposition that it took away from some of the comedy.

Tuesday’s episode “After Hours,” though, was a little bit of a culmination of most of the season, and it was executed with enough humor to keep us interested and invested. The biggest news through here was Jenna trying to pair up Matty with Eva as a way to prove that she had moved on … even though she hadn’t. It is a little frustrating to see the show dip back into the same well over and over again, but clearly they know that this pairing is the crux of the series.

In the end, though, this is not what you are going to be talking about for the time being. Instead, we imagine the main event being Matty and Jake’s arrest after their night of partying with the game that included drinking and fake IDs. There are obviously HUGE ramifications that come with this, and it could change the entire series for them if they are not able to get out of it.

On more of an emotional note, this episode may have marked the end of the Sadie / Austin relationship after he found out about her and Matty kissing earlier this season. In a way, this was jarring given how obsessed he was with her earlier in the series’ run to have him suddenly be confident enough to break things off. But, she betrayed him, and seeing a vulnerable Sadie should be fun since she literally has nothing now. She works at a food truck, has very few friends, and not even a boyfriend to back her up now.

As tragic as all of this was, there were still many funny moments throughout the episode that gives us hope that despite the frequent angst, there are still good things on the horizon. The show is still missing that comedic scene-stealer among the high schoolers, though, and perhaps we miss the Ming character even more than we imagined that we would. Grade: B.
