‘Masters of Sex’ season 2 spoilers: Sarah Silverman to recur

“Masters of Sex” has just added yet another person to its season 2 cast, and this is someone you are already familiar with.

Showtime confirmed today that actress / comedienne Sarah Silverman will recur throughout the upcoming season (premiering this summer on Showtime) as Helen, a former love of Betty (Annaleigh Ashford) who may just happen to be the perfect person for her. TVLine claims that this character is a palm-reader who is supremely confident that she actually has a gift. As for her status as a lesbian, she is still firmly in the closet (understandable given the time period).

Now before we go any further, we have to roll our eyes for a minute at any conspiracy theory that Silverman was cast just because her boyfriend is Michael Sheen. Completely nuts. Showtime has way too much money invested to pull a stunt like that. You may not have seen some of her acting roles over the years, but Sarah’s got some good dramatic chops and should be able to pull this part off. We also have to roll our eyes at the outlets that have automatically assumed that her personal life somehow means that she is going to play a role that throws her into the same world as Sheen’s Dr. William Masters directly.

The series will look and feel different in many ways this coming season, mostly thanks to the fact that Masters will not be around many of his old colleagues anymore, and he now has to find a way to continue moving forward with his study while reconciling the fact that he is in love with Virginia … a woman who is clearly not his wife.
