‘Mad Men’ season 7, episode 3 podcast: A ‘Field Trip’ chat with Jessa
“Mad Men” brought us another complicated new episode on Sunday night in “Field Trip,” though it was complicated in a different way than most of the other recent hours. Rather than spending a great deal of time diving into multiple characters, it instead challenged us to try and understand more of what was happening when it comes to a select few.
Therefore, this podcast with CarterMatt co-founder Jessa is a little shorter than most, since the primary subjects worthy of discussion this week were as follows:
1. Seeing Don and Megan’s marriage continue to crumble, and whether or not this is something that Don actually wants. Is he more in love with the idea of marriage than being married, and why not just move out there?
2. Don’s return to SC&P, and how it was surprising that only a certain amount of people wanted him there despite his talent. Also, Don agreed to come back despite a lengthy list of provisions that were never in place for him previously.
3. The bizarre story of Betty Francis, who really did not even need to be there as we saw her have one complaining fit after another about going on a field trip with her son, only to later realize that her son had traded away her sandwich. The horror!
We also do touch on the debate about why the show works hard to make us dislike Betty, and yet through Don’s narrative we want to see his story through … even though he is as terrible a person as anyone on this show.
