Ratings: NBC’s ‘Community’ sees renewal chances slip; ‘Reign,’ ‘Shark Tank’ fall
The headline of this ratings story is a sad one: The idea of “six seasons and a movie” for “Community” is starting to slowly slip away. The latest ratings for Thursday night show the series at yet another series low, and this one is the sort that few series typically survive with.
The rating that we are talking about here specifically is a 0.8 in the 18-49 demographic, and while the show is still exceedingly funny, we feel like there are ultimately a chorus of factors working against it now: It’s already at the syndication threshold, NBC doesn’t produce the show (Sony does), and their recent comedies “About a Boy” and “Growing Up Fisher” have turned into modest successes. Granted, they’ve had the luxury of airing after new episodes of “The Voice,” but without a sample of how they would perform without it, it’s hard to really compare.
Do we think that “Community” could still be renewed? Sure, but mostly because it is NBC. We’re never ruling out anything when it comes to this network anymore given their other history of weird renewals.
As for other important ratings news…
-“Shark Tank” did fairly well in its test on Thursday night, scoring a 1.6 rating. With that being said, though, it still has done better on Fridays, and we feel like that is still the right spot for it given that there is no real competition then from other networks.
-Without “The Vampire Diaries” as a lead-in, “Reign” dropped down to a 0.4 rating. It’s already renewed so there is no real reason to worry, but could this be another “Beauty and the Beast” situation where the show struggles without something to prop it up?
-“The Big Bang Theory,” of course, won the night with a 4.6.
