‘Mad Men’ season 7 spoilers: Creator on Don Draper’s choices, consequences
You are never really going to get any straightforward scoop when it comes to a new “Mad Men” season before it airs, but this is probably going to be the closest thing that you will possibly get. At least what we have for you below is an extensive quote about some of what Don Draper could be going through, and the themes that he will explore in the wake of the changes in his life.
Before we share that quote from creator Matthew Weiner, a quick recap. The last time that we had “Mad Men,” Don was dismissed pretty much from his firm over some of his behavior, and at home, he had to make a more personal connection stemming from these self-realizations. What started all of this? When he was caught with Sylvia by his own daughter, and saw through her yet again that he had created his own monster.
Now, let’s turn to Weiner’s quote in a TV Guide interview:
“I think it’s always hard for [viewers] that I just [continue] the story whenever I want to. The second season, everyone was like, ‘Peggy had a baby. When are we going to find out about that?’ Well, you did, eventually. It did become a big part of the story. But I can say that all of the repercussions of last season, that’s what this season is about. What are the things that you do that you can’t undo? Don was caught by his daughter in an affair. That affair was then ended by Sylvia, and Don couldn’t take it. In fact, I don’t think Don even cared about that affair until Sylvia ended it. But Megan doesn’t know about it. She just knows that their marriage has gone bad. Was the affair the symptom, or was it the disease? Don says he’s going to try to stop drinking — is that a commitment? That’s setting the stage for the season.”
So obviously, the status of Don’s marriage is something that has to be addressed first and foremost, and from there we turn to the relationship with Sally, and then potentially his job. It’s very well possible that he could be at SC&P again when the story returns and we are left to play catch-up, even if that is not what we want to see at all.
