‘House of Lies’ season 3, episode 7 review: Jeannie pulls a fast one
“House of Lies” has woven many complicated stories over the years, but what has made this season particularly interesting is that it has served as a nice reminder time and time again that Marty Kaan is not the smartest guy in the world all of the time. Also, he is not often the best father or the nice associate to have by your side either.
Basically, it was not Marty who orchestrated a possible end to the DollaHyde standoff this week. Instead, it was none other than Jeannie who worked the magic by getting to Lukas in a way that Marty could not: Flirtation, and appealing to the man’s solid ego. She convinced him to take a buyout, even if it was for a heck of a lot more money than what Marty originally wanted.
Then, there is Marty just not getting it together as a father: It’s either that or him being upset over his son Roscoe not being what he has long perceived him to be. He’s acting out almost because of his lack of acceptance, and because he and Lex are so lost in the world. It’s clear that the producers of “House of Lies” did not know just how timely this story would be right now with the Sochi Olympics and with Jason Collins today, but it was very effective and the closing minutes with Marty taking care of his son were very powerful.
By the way, can we spend a paragraph or so talking about how awesome Bex Taylor-Klaus is? Watching her completely morph into a different person, and the ashamed look on her face in doing so, was beyond phenomenal. It’s interesting in a way that we’ve seen almost her entire career unfold from “The Killing” onward, and she’s been good in every thing (even if we wish Sin had more to do at times on “Arrow”).
This was one of the better episodes of the season, and possible the series overall. We did not necessarily find it hilarious, but it did make us feel something. Anytime that a show can do that at this point, we have to stand up and applaud. Grade: A-.
