NBC reviving ‘Heroes’ for 13-episode miniseries in 2015
What is it with networks dropping big bombs this weekend in the evening? Yesterday, it was ABC and the news that Brooke Burke-Charvet would not be returning to “Dancing with the Stars.” Today, it is that NBC has decided for some reason to bring back “Heroes” as a 13-episode miniseries in 2015.
The new series, which will be headed again by show creator Tim Kring, is entitled “Heroes: Reborn,” and it could (per Jennifer Salke at the network) feature appearances from some actors who were a part of the original series. Personally, we wouldn’t rule out seeing more of Sendhil Ramamurthy, since he was the glue that kept a good bit of it together.
When “Heroes” originally launched in the fall of 2006, it was a quick hit for the network, and international phenomenon, and almost everyone liked it. Then, season 2 happened. Most of the goodwill the show earned was taken away by the way that the first season ended, and then the storylines became rather boring and stale. Viewership flocked away from the show, and then by the time the fourth season rolled around, its ratings were anemic to the point that cancellation was inevitable.
We get why “Heroes” is coming back: Event series are popular right now, and so are superheroes on TV. However, these are also good reasons to not go down this road again. We already have “Arrow” and “Agents of SHIELD” now, and the big selling point that got people watching “Heroes” back then was that nobody really had anything quite like it. We just feel like the market is kind of tapped out, and there are going to be few who are extremely interested in this after bailing on the original show.
