‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ review: Did Kenya Moore really honor NeNe Leakes?
If you enjoy mindgames and social dynamics in your TV shows, the Sunday night’s “Real Housewives of Atlanta” episode was a master class in what you like to see. There was a lot that happened here that was fascinating, but what we really want to talk about here is Kenya Moore’s somewhat-ruse of a party, which was both very kind and very passive-aggressive at the same time.
Make no mistake of it: Kenya clearly knew what she was doing when she decided to throw a massive party for a charity that NeNe Leakes supports, even though there was no prompting for her to do so at all. She wanted to create what was in her mind an ideal situation. If NeNe threw a fit about it, she would look like the awful person for not being happy about her charities being supported. Meanwhile, if NeNe was gracious, she was gracious. Kenya knew that this was a complete win-win situation.
So to find a way for NeNe to freak out about this was still priceless, and we saw the real reason for it coming a mile away: She claimed that she never received a real invitation. In not calling NeNe up, Kenya violated a classic rule of party etiquette: Assuming that someone got your invitation without double-checking it. Do we believe what NeNe was saying here? Sure, mostly because there wasn’t really that big of a reason for her to lie about it. We can’t see her being upset about a charity she supports getting money donated, even at the hands of someone she doesn’t always care for.
Beyond this event, there were some other interesting developments, mainly of course getting the opportunity to see the play auditions take place. Who knew that Porsha Stewart could actually sing better than most of the “housewives” who have released “songs” from other shows? She’s a much better singer than actor, anyway.
As for that Mama Joyce segment, the less we say about that the better. It feels like so long as Todd is around, Kandi Burruss is never going to have any peace of mind at all when it comes to her mom.
All in all, though, a much-improved episode on the past two weeks, where all of the constant violence cast everyone in an ugly and depressing light. Grade: B-.
