‘Sherlock’ season 4 spoilers: Steven Moffat very coy on Moriarty’s future
There is no greater villain for many Sherlock Holmes fans than Moriarty. He is basically the Joker to Sherlock’s Batman, the Darth Vader to his Luke Skywalker. He is one of the most fascinating villains in literature, and that has carried over well to the small-screen adaptation from Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss.
But what does the future hold for the character on “Sherlock” season 4? This is what we are still very intrigued to find out. For the time being, of course Steven Moffat is not willing to give away too much, save for what we saw in those brief flashes on video screens at the end of the season 3 finale. What he would really say, per Vulture, is that this is a part of a larger play that they have devised for quite a long time now:
“I can’t really say what we’re doing with that, but there is no last-minute whim in this … We’ve had what we’re going to do with Moriarty in place from before the second season. Exactly what we’re going to do.”
Moffat also said that the brilliant performance of Andrew Scott in the role had originally caused him to change what was the original plan for the character, who is now completely indispensable to everything that is coming up ahead:
“Obviously Sherlock Holmes must have a Moriarty. The thing that happened that was different because of Andrew was that, originally, in ‘The Great Game,’ the only scene that you saw Moriarty in was when he plays who we used to call Gay Jim. Gay Jim from IT. He comes in and Sherlock deduces that he’s gay. It was quite good … At the very end, Sherlock would have realized that he was Moriarty and that he’s just missed him. The great game has begun! But we weren’t going to see Moriarty again.”
At the moment, the biggest question that we assume most fans have is just when the new season is going to start filming … but there is no concrete answer to that. The assumption to understandably have is that it will take place eventually, but you need to make certain that everyone is both prepared and free when it comes to their schedule first.
