NBC’s ‘Community’ season 5: Joel McHale scores White House Correspondents Dinner gig

The latest -Joel McHale has had the opportunity to perform at some big gigs over the past couple of years, but this one may be one of the biggest: Taking on the White House Correspondents Dinner. This is an incredible difficult room to perform in, mostly because it is full of often-cynical, hard-nosed people who are afraid to laugh about themselves. Oh, and in addition to the cable news reporters, Congressional leaders are also there. (That’s just us getting into the spirit of the event!)

There have been a number of comics who have done a great job with this crowd, with Seth Meyers being one of the most prominent. Meanwhile, there have also bee some like Jay Leno who have brought out more minor chuckles than belly laughs, and some in Stephen Colbert who basically went up and mocked President Bush to his face. We’re still wondering who thought it was going to be a good idea to hire him.

The “Community” star is known for having a very brash style of humor, and that is what makes him fairly interesting as a choice for this. He’s not going to hold anything back, and in that way he is similar to last year’s host Conan O’Brien. Conan’s reviews were mostly positive from the event, though there were a good many in the crowd who seemed at times afraid to exhibit any reaction at all from what he was saying. (Just in case you missed it, you can watch Conan’s show below.)

McHale’s gig works out well when it comes to timing, given that “Community” will be done filming for the season at the time of the event May 3, and he can balance that with his other job hosting “The Soup.”
