‘Girls’ season 3, episode 6 review: ‘Free Snacks,’ and a Hannah conflict that makes sense
There have been times this season where “Girls” has troubled us even more than it usually does, in particular when you are talking about the Hannah Horvath character. We understand that this is a young woman who is not supposed to always been likable, but there have been times when she has become a little bit like a sitcom / cartoon character.
However, “Free Snacks” changed that for us, as it gave the Hannah character what was arguably one of her most realistic story arcs that we have seen from her almost the entire season: A struggle when it comes to how creative she can be in a job that only touches the periphery of her skills. She is working in the advertorials department of GQ Magazine, in what is now an endless cycle. If you become entranced with the pay and the cycle, you can lose who you are and what your original passions and dreams are.
Hannah realized in the process of her working here that maybe it wasn’t right for her … and then she almost quit. She actually did the smart thing by deciding to stay on, but she realizes now that she will have to figure out where she will find time to write. This was a sign of her actually growing up, and realizing that she cannot make a living just being creative with no paycheck coming in.
Now, the other storylines. We’re going to ignore Shoshanna and Jessa for the time being, mostly because neither one of them really did that much. However, we really did very much enjoy what we saw from Marnie and Ray tonight, since it was so perfectly dysfunctional for the two of them as they try to have a relationship despite having nothing in common. We really root for Ray in a way; he’s like the male version of Hannah in that he is very shortsighted and selfish, but he at least figured out a little something known as empathy.
These two stories combined gave us what may be the best, and most meaningful, episode of “Girls” this entire season. Grade: A-.
