‘True Detective’ episode 4 preview: Martin Hart lands in hot water
There is some trouble brewing for Martin Hart on HBO’s “True Detective,” and there is also a delightful bit of irony that comes along with it.
What are we talking about here specifically? It is largely tied to the notion of what makes a detective “true” in the first place. There is quite a bit of irony in the fact that Martin carries around with him this facade of being a virtuous and moral man, when he has just as much darkness in his life as Rust Cohle (if not more). He is the one who is a philanderer and an alcoholic in the time frame presented by the show, while we’ve seen so much more of a guy in Rust who has some sort of established rules to live by … even if they are not exactly orthodox by any means.
This sneak peek HERE from Sunday night’s new episode teases that there is some major conflict ahead for the Martin character, especially when his drinking and his philandering combine to create a problem. Is his wife about to find out the truth about what he has been up to some nights? We have to imagine so, even if there is probably a big part of her that has already figured out most of it already. The part of this that really surprises us is just how Martin doesn’t even try to act like he really even cares that much if she finds out. That is one of the last things that we expected from a guy who had worked so hard in the first place to create this whole facade so that he could live under it.
This “True Detective” is the first in two weeks, and it follows a hiatus due to the Super Bowl. There is still competition from the Olympics, but we imagine that dedicated viewers will at least have it set on their DVR.
