‘The Tomorrow People’ episode 12 review: Astrid’s surprise and the best episode yet

The Tomorrow People -All season long, we feel like we’ve been waiting for the pieces on “The Tomorrow People” to come together and create something that was exciting and generally well-made. We finally had that with Wednesday night’s episode, where most of the elements worked, and the show did some things that we have been suggesting since the pilot.

For example, it finally was made apparent here that these Tomorrow People were not just floating around everywhere. The moment that Stephen’s mother revealed that she was dating a new man in Peter, how easy was it to roll your eyes and start to think that this man was somehow evil incarnate? Luckily, he wasn’t; it was just all a trick to make him appear so to Stephen. Seeing him suffer the consequences of something he didn’t deserve from Robbie Amell’s character was wonderfully dark, and a genuine moment where we remembered that there was a real world outside these walls.

That moment also came a little bit later when Astrid had to save John’s life after she became a target from Ultra, mostly because she was seen having some sort of contact with those with powers. Now, she lives within the halls of the People until there is a way in which to figure out what to do with her next. This would have been a surprise in itself, but also finding out that Stephen’s own brother has powers? The icing on the cake. We dug the daring storytelling here, and the willingness to give us a lot of what we wanted in a short amount of time.

There are still some problems with the show, though, namely that Ultra continues to look like the dumbest organization in the world, and we have no idea how Astrid and John were not discovered, while Cara found them in a split-second. Still, progress, is progress, and at least the show took a major step in the right direction tonight. Grade: B+.
