NBC’s ‘Community’ season 5: Say goodbye to Donald Glover with Troy’s top 5 moments
On Thursday night, we bid farewell to Donald Glover on “Community,” a guy who was really instrumental in helping the show be a success. Troy Barnes is a character that found its voice at the Community College, and became one of the craziest, most-likable people there. He was flawed, insecure, emotional, loyal, and above all, funny. Even though Glover is only 30 years old, the guy has already accomplish so much as a writer (“30 Rock”), actor, comedian, and a rapper that most people would be lucky to even have one of these careers.
But as we bid farewell to the greatness that was Troy, let’s look back on five moments that we in particular still want to watch back on YouTube time and time again. (Heck, we do while watching this.)
5. Troy and Abed’s Christmas rap – “We have to save Christmas to save our friends.” It’s weird in a way that we have two raps from Troy on here, given that Glover did so much more over the course of the series beyond just doing what he does regularly as Childish Gambino. But, they both work for very different reasons. This really kicked off a wonderful “Glee” send-up for a holiday episode, and one so great that we wish Taran Killan could stop by again. Plus, Abed adding to the rap made it even better.
4. Troy demands to be housewarmed – “Remedial Chaos Theory” is just as a whole one of the best episodes of the entire series; it was completely annotative, weird, and original to a point that we feel like other shows still strive to do something like it. The quote comes in particular from one timeline, and both it and the video below revolve around a Norwegian troll that Pierce tries to give Troy as a housewarming gift. Hilarity ensues.
3. Troy saves Greendale – There is way too much of the season 2 Halloween special to put in here, but it was a big moment for Troy as he not only single-handedly stopped a “zombie” infestation at Greendale, but also, while dressed as “sexy Dracula,” broke all stereotypes about who always is the first one to die in horror flicks. (The clip below is just a part of the madness.)
2. Troy and Abed’s Spanish rap – There are probably some funnier moments on the show for Troy and Abed, but this remains a personal favorite just for simplicity and nostalgic value. This is one of those moments from the show’s very first season that had us hooked almost right away, and it helped for us to catapult “Troy and Abed in the Morning” into a thing. (It will get stuck in your head in the blink of an eye!)
1. Troy vs. LeVar Burton – “You can’t disappoint a picture” and “set phasers to love me” are just two quotes that come from what may be our favorite sequence in the history of the entire show. What a great way to use a guest star, and we’re so happy that LeVar was game for it. But Glover really steals this, as he showed time and time again that Emotional Troy is one of the greatest things ever.
