‘Saturday Night Live’: Melissa McCarthy to host for third time on Super Bowl Weekend
Melissa McCarthy is hopefully going to be bringing some more laughs to the weekend of the big game.
According to a new report from Variety, the star of “Mike & Molly” is returning to “Saturday Night Live” for her third time hosting the show on February 1, which is the day before the Super Bowl will air on Fox. Since the game’s on a different network than NBC this time around, we don’t really expect that much of a tie-in from the show. This is probably why McCarthy was brought in as the host here: She’s one of the best of the past few years, and her off-the-wall comedy can be a nice distraction to everything else that is happening on other networks.
At the moment, there is no musical guest announced for the show, but you have to believe that Melissa is not pulling double-duty like Drake is next weekend. It will probably be some sort of indie band or underground pop star, mostly because “SNL” chooses to save some of their big musical acts either for premieres, finales, holiday episodes, or maybe the first episode back after a brief hiatus.
McCarthy is someone who is a perfect addition to the show in that she has such a huge comedy background, and she sort of fits the mold of a Steve Carell or a Stephen Colbert in that it took her a long time to start to make it big. While her CBS show was a big break, an even bigger one was her role in “Bridesmaids.” It’s following the film that she has been able to secure more movie gigs, and also got so much interest from the show.
Do you think that Melissa is the right person to host the show on Super Bowl Weekend, or have you always found her hosting jobs a little bit uneven? Let us know your thoughts below.
