‘NCIS’ season 11, episode 11 preview: Rocky Carroll previews Ben Vareen story
Tonight’s “NCIS” episode “Homesick” is the final installment of 2013, and it also marks an opportunity for us to start to get to know a little bit more backstory on Leon Vance, his family, and how he is trying to move forward as a widower.
So on this episode, he is visited by his late wife’s father Lamar (Ben Vareen), who has not exactly been the model of perfect or even good parenting over the course of the show so far. Instead, what we have seen from the guy is basically nothing. He was not even present at the funeral for his daughter, which is one of the most truly egregious things about him.
So given everything that has happened already, what in the world brings this man back into the picture Tuesday night? Rocky Carroll spoke on this subject to TVLine, and explained that much of it has to do with this man trying to find his own sort of redemption with Vance’s family, and move on past some of his own personal demons (however difficult that may be):
“The thing that brings him back is that he has heard she had died, so he comes to try to make amends as best he can and possibly have some sort of a relationship with his grandchildren. Vance, of course, is very resistant to any part of this. He has a very hard time coming to terms with the fact that somebody can basically give themselves a “do over” in life, just leave the way this guy did.”
