‘Survivor’ renewed for seasons 29 and 30, Jeff Probst to remain host / executive producer

Jeff Probst -Just in case you were really ever worried about the future of “Survivor” beyond this spring, don’t be. CBS not only today confirmed that the show would be back for two more cycles next year, but that Jeff Probst would remain the host and primary showrunner for the program. This will bring the season count up to 30 come the spring of 2015, which will also be when the show celebrates its 15th anniversary of being a part of the CBS family.

This renewal for the show has been pretty standard as of late, with Probst and CBS each making their decisions a year at a time. Even when Jeff was hosting his daytime talk show, he still claimed that he was planning to do “Survivor” without hesitation. We can’t really see him deciding to someday not be a part of the show, and that decision could ultimately be more up to the network.

Whenever you do get to milestones like season 30 and the 15th anniversary, that is when you have to wonder whether or not this will be when “Survivor” decides to snuff its own torch. The ratings are of course not what they were a decade ago; however, that can be said for the vast majority of television. “Survivor” has been #1 in adults 18-49 throughout most of the fall, and it even competed at times against “American Idol” in the spring. Its ratings really have not fallen as much as most other series have over the years, and the quality is still great. That’s the benefit of starting out every year with a new cast; you can miss a season, come back on board, and still enjoy it just as much.

We know at least some people have returned to the show with “Blood vs. Water,” which has to be the season that has defied expectations the most. Early on, we felt like this was going to be terrible with all of the twists and Redemption Island; but, it has turned out to be intense, rewarding, and different from every other season. We’re still glad that next season will be more old-school with a batch of new players in the mix, but this is one of the best twists that we’ve had.
