ABC’s ‘Scandal’ season 3, episode 9 review: Jeff Perry is brilliant … and who did Sally kill?
On Thursday night’s “Scandal” episode “YOLO,” there were quite a few opportunities to see some pretty shocking / terrible things go down. We saw betrayal, photos of people in various states of undress, and also some of hardest scenes to watch in the history of the show.
When talking about these scenes, we are of course referencing first of all what happened between Quinn and Huck. The one man that she cared about ended up being the same man who was willing to relentlessly torture her. This was just an awful sequence to watch as he yanked out her teeth, she was crying, and then she … made out with Charlie? This to us really made no sense at all. Why would you want to do this? Is there really no other way to go about showing that you are on somebody’s side?
While Quinn was making a new “ally,” Cyrus was watching an entire plan and his marriage blow up in his face. Man, was Jeff Perry great in these scenes as he started to make it clear that he orchestrated the plan to expose Sally Langston’s husband as gay … he just didn’t think presumably that James would go as far as he did as to be with him. This is a horrible messed-up situation made even worse by the fact that Cyrus tried to then backtrack on everything to James when he realized that he was not going to be able to use the photos as evidence to take down Sally. Instead, what we have here was a scene at the tail end of the episode where Sally seemingly murdered her husband.
It’s a testament to Perry that we enjoyed this story even more so than the Olivia one, mostly because it was through this that we learned that her mother was not the “sweet” mom or the victim that she had long thought; instead, Eli was actually trying to protect her from “Maya Lewis.” A pretty stunning end to a stunning episode, and we’re on bated breath for what is coming up next. Grade: B+.
