‘The Originals’ episode 9 (fall finale) review: What happened to Klaus and Cami?

Meet the cast -The Originals” came to a close (at least for the fall) on Tuesday night, and the episode title in “Reigning Pain in New Orleans” was no joke. Not only was it speaking about Klaus’ reign as the “king” of New Orleans, but he also rained plenty of pain upon some people in power in the city. He and Marcel, his supposed new partner-in-crime, murdered most of the key city officials trying to barter off a peaceful coexistence with him.

But just in case this was not enough pain for you, Klaus decided that he also wanted to ensure that there were no werewolves still breathing within the region to ever help Hayley … you know, the mother of his child. Who does this to someone who is having their kid? To make matters even more complicated, at least one of the wolves out there in the swamp may be a part of his bloodline. Wait, does this mean that Hayley and Klaus are related somehow? You could say “eww” all you want, but they’d be related in much of the same way as other people that you’d have to go back a hundred or so generations to figure out.

On a different note, this episode also did a powerful job of showing us more of Klaus’ origin story, and the evolution of Cami’s relationship with him. She did finally learn a thing or two about him, only for him to later compel her again in a heartbreaking moment to leave. This feels almost like Caroline all over again, except sad for a series of different circumstances. He gave up on someone who wanted to actually be at his side, mostly because he didn’t want to see her hurt. He was actually selfless for a change! That’s progress right? In between this and him deciding to ultimately protect the werewolves, we think so. Granted, his trick on Cami didn’t quite work based on that cliffhanger, where her memories came back (apparently that’s possible).

Elsewhere, we also had the “shocker” of all time in that Marcel turned his back on Rebekah, proving once again that she has some pretty terrible taste in guys. She should just go back to Mystic Falls and be with Matt at this point.

All in all, wasn’t this a lovely way to cap “The Originals” this fall? There was some progress made for the characters, and some great emotional scenes in here that remind us that this is a show to keep track of in the spring. Well done, Klaus and company. Grade: B+.
